Kalamaja Wooden Architecture District in Talllinn Estonia

Kalamaja wooden architecture district is situated in Tallinn between the fortified Old Town and the sea. It is one of the oldest suburbs of Tallinn. Many years ago the Kalamaja district was populated mostly by poorer folk-fishermen, harbor workers, and craftsmen. It was famous for being a village of fishmongers, fishermen, and maritime pilots. However, today the quarter has undergone a complete makeover and was turned into an attractive residential area which is really loved by artists, composers, architects, and actors.

You should definitely pay a visit to the Kalamaja district since it is not only a fashionable living area, but is also a district where people still like fishing and the simple life. Unfortunately, some of the buildings were ruined during inadequate reconstruction works. However, some of the restored wooden houses still stand strong. A lot of factory buildings have been converted for other uses but some of them are still intact and operating. For example, even today the Estonia Piano Factory is continuing to produce some of the world’s best grand pianos.

Besides the old buildings, there are lots of other sights to see, for example, a cemetery that was situated at the far end of the district; Patarei Prison, the defence barracks of the 19th century; Noblessner Shipyard where submarines were built. Here you can also find some perfect family-oriented museums like Energy Discovery Center and Kalamaja Children´s Museum Miiamilla. In addition, Kalamaja is a home to the city’s new maritime museum, the Seaplane Harbor.

If you are truly tired of Old Town then we recommend visiting this lovely and stylish district, which will hopefully give you a lot of new emotions!
